Why I'm Running

It’s time for us to take our government back. I’m running to restore the House of Representatives to what the Founding Fathers intended it to be – the house of the people.

For decades, the ultra-wealthy (e.g. the Koch brothers), corporations, PACs and political parties have viewed Congress as a chessboard to move pieces around on and either enact their agenda or, barring that, block any movement at all. The results?

  1. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, in 2018 the US ranked 27th in the world for its levels of health care and education, compared to sixth in 1990

  2. We have a regressive tax code under which the 400 wealthiest families have a lower tax burden than 99.99% of the population

  3. We have $1 trillion annual budget deficits and almost $23 trillion in total debt

  4. Working- and middle-class wages have been effectively stagnant for 30 years, and have not kept up with rising housing and health care costs (Texas ranks last in the U.S. in health care access and affordability)

  5. There has been no action on climate change, immigration, or gun violence,

Less than 20% of congressional districts are considered competitive. The majority of congress-persons are more concerned about a well-funded primary challenger than they are about losing their seat to a candidate from the other party. And since the bases of both parties demand ideological purity, divisiveness is commonplace, and compromise has become unacceptable.

In short, the House of Representatives largely represents special interests, not the interests of we, the people. The issues we face are critical, but we’ll never address them if we don’t change who we send to Washington to represent us.

Before looking at a candidate’s positions on issues, look at where their campaign funding comes from. If it’s from PACs, corporations, or large groups of individuals concentrated in particular business areas (e.g. big pharma, oil and gas), you can guess who’s interests they’ll represent in congress. Look for candidates whose funding comes entirely from individual contributors from all walks of life. Those candidates, like me, rely only on grass roots support and will work for you.
